Charter Town Hall in Anderson Valley 4/11

The Charter Project of Mendocino County is hosting a series of 9 Town Hall meetings around the county to introduce people to Charter Commission candidates for the June 7th election, and also to canvass the public about what they would like to see in a county charter.  

What is a charter, anyway? What does home rule mean to Mendocino County? Get the answers at one of these Town Hall meetings.

The 4th Town Hall meeting will be held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Anderson Valley Grange, 9800 Highway 128 in Philo from 4pm to 6pm.

The Measure W question will be in the ballot in the June election, "Shall a Charter Commission be elected to propose a Mendocino County Charter?"

There will also be candidates running for the post of Charter Commissioner. You will be able to vote for 15 of them in June.

Meet 2 Charter Commission candidates:

  • Ellen Ann Rosser, Ph.D. -  retired English professor, social justice Ellen Rosseractivist and union rep.  Publisher of her 1914 award-winning poetry magazine, Hard Pressed.  After visiting Jerusalem, she helped initiate peace talks with a Judeo-Christian-Islamic Council authorized to rebuild the Temple of King Solomon.  Ellen demonstrates every Friday against wars, the occupation of Palestine, for Black Lives Matter and ending the oligarchic control by the big banks and corporations.  She helped pass Measure F (Overturn Citizens United) and is now running for Charter Commissioner in order to authorize a county public bank.

  • Lynda McClure spent her childhood in Ukiah. After finishing a Masters in Social Work from CSU Sacramento, Lynda McClure.smallestshe worked most of her adult career as a labor organizer for SEIU. She has also worked at a battered women’s shelter, and sits on the boards of the Cloud Forest Institute and the Mendocino Women’s Political Coalition. She helps organize the annual Not So Simple Living Fair, co-hosts Corporations and Democracy on KZYX, and sings with the Raging Grannies and the Anderson Valley Chorus. Lynda is determined to strengthen Community Rights to protect our county from corporate rule.  

 

We are delighted to feature famed Community Rights advocate Paul Cienfuegos, longtime activist and community organizer. In 1994, POCLAD helped Paul Paul Cienfuegosrealize the insidious impact of corporate rule. In 1995, he co-founded Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County, which began works to dismantle corporate political power. Paul now leads Democracy workshops and talks across the nation. He will speak about Community Rights and how the charter can secure our rights.

The third Town Hall meeting will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Garcia Grange, 43970 Crispin Road in Manchester from 3pm to 6pm.

Meet 2 Charter Commission candidates:

  • David SowderDavid Sowder - After receiving his  MFA in Theater from Willamette University in Oregon, he was active in the l960's anti-war movement.  David moved to the Mendocino coast in 2001.   He participated in the no GMO, the no fracking, and the no off-shore drilling movements.  He participated in Occupy Mendocino and also was involved in the Move to Amend Initiative: he helped do fundraising for ending corporate rule in politics and restore democracy through campaign finance reform.  I am also an active member of South Coast People for Peace and Justice, which demonstrates every Friday in Gualala.  I have a holistic, integrated, unity consciousness that believes in education, freedom, self-determination and human rights for all people. 

     Jed Davis

  • Jed Davis - Aquaponic farmer, has been living in Mendocino County since 2002 and has been active in fighting unlawful foreclosures. He believes the law regarding the recording of foreclosures by the County Recorder is flawed. Jed sees the county charter as an opportunity to correct that error and eliminate most fraudulent foreclosures.

An Evening with Vandana Shiva - September 7th

Join us on September 7, 2015 for an evening with Vandana Shiva - where all will enjoy good food, good music, and good conversation in celebration and preservation of our local abundance.

Dr. Vandana Shiva
is a world renowned and award winning author of 20 books, philosopher, environmentalist, professional speaker and social activist who has fought for changes in the practice and paradigms of agriculture and food. Having contributed with ideas and through activist campaigns to intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics, and genetic engineering, Dr. Shiva is also founder of Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. She will give a talk about rights to self-government granted by Home Rule and help us raise funds for the Charter Project of Mendocino County.

Come listen to the Raging Grannies sing their favorite anti-Monsanto songs, enjoy farm-to-table hors d'oeuvres prepared by Chef Sadhana, savor local wine, and relax to the music of Clay Hawkins. Bid on an amazing array of items at the silent auction, and help raise funds to mold the Mendocino County government into one that will serve the unique needs of this county.  All tickets are SOLD OUT. Standing room only is still available. 


There will be a chartered bus to take people from the coast to the event. The bus will leave Point Arena at around 4:00 pm, making a stops in Albion, and then stopping at the Boatyard in Fort Bragg at around 5:00 pm.
