Meet the Candidates

Lynda McClure for Charter Commissioner

Lynda McClure lived in Ukiah as a child in the 1950’s. Her father was a logger and her mother was secretary to Masonite’s general manager. She finished high school in Sacramento and, after marriage and two kids, graduated with a Master of Social Work degree from California State University, Sacramento, and completed post-graduate work in Public Administration there. Kids are grown and have gifted two grandkids.  Lynda McClure

Lynda worked throughout California for Service Employees International Union (SEIU) as a labor organizer and representative for most of her professional career. She also worked at a battered women’s shelter, served as executive director for two non-profit organizations, and was California 1st Congressional district field staff.

Lynda co-founded and resides in a small community in Anderson Valley, which is dedicated to self-sufficiency and land stewardship. Currently she sits on the executive boards of Cloud Forest Institute and Mendocino Women’s Political Coalition. She is on the organizing committee for the Not So Simple Living Fair, co-hosts Corporations and Democracy on KZYX&Z, and sings with Mendocino’s Raging Grannies and the Anderson Valley chorus. Other hobbies include gardening, playing the uke, and bicycling.

A determination to strengthen community rights and protect our county from harmful corporate rule is the driving force for Lynda’s candidacy for Charter Commissioner. She has worked on several of the local ballot initiatives that focus on community versus corporate rights; banning GMO crops, fracking, and Measure V to stop the timber industry practice of poisoning and leaving dead trees standing in our forests.

Mary Zellachild for Charter Commissioner

Mary Zellachild

In another lifetime I was a suburban housewife in the Bay Area with 4 kids. When my second husband and I started looking for country land in 1979, Laytonville was the first place we found property we could afford. But the big city called me again and I've lived in Willits for the last 34 years.

Going the usual country career route of working odd jobs, I finally found my niche in Ecology Action, John Jeavons' organization—where I still work today. During my 26 years there I gradually became aware of the inequities existing in the world, particularly in the realm of agriculture.

Ten years ago, I was part of the dedicated crew that started Willits Economic Localization, and am still passionate about localizing. Somehow I have felt drawn into helping create a public bank, and through that became part of the Charter Project of Mendocino County. I strongly believe that in order to have the kind of governance we want, it's up to all of us to stay actively involved in the process. No one else is going to do it for us.

I urge you to vote YES on Measure W June 7th to make Mendocino California's 15th charter county.

Michael St. John for Charter Commissioner

Michael St. John

I am a candidate for Charter Commissioner because I believe that a County Charter can make a real difference in our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren. Trained in both economics and in mediation, I believe that I can contribute usefully to the charter creation process – an exercise in democracy that will set the stage for home rule in Mendocino County.

My previous service on Boards and Commissions will inform my participation on the Charter Commission. I was a commissioner in the 1980s on Berkeley’s Rent Stabilization Board and in the 1990s on Berkeley’s Housing Advisory Commission. More recently, I served two terms on the Mendocino Historical Review Board.

I co-teach a community extension class at the Fort Bragg Campus of Mendocino College. The class – Citizenship in an Age of Corporate Power – seeks to bring light to the outcomes that flow from the ways in which our economic and governmental systems interact. Enacting a county charter will set the stage for policies and programs that have the potential to benefit the people of our county.

Jed Davis for Charter Commisioner

Jed Davis2Jed Davis grew up on the Central Coast of California and studied Biology and Finance at San Diego State University. Jed owns Aqua Gardens Family Farm, an organic aquaponic farm in Potter Valley.

Jed first entered the real estate profession as a mortgage originator in 2001 with Andersen financial in Arroyo Grande California. He has since been involved in real estate development, the residential rental market, and real estate investment.

In an effort to modify his mortgage loan in 2012, he found forged and falsified documents related to his mortgage that were recorded in our County Recorder's Office.  This led Jed down the Unlawful Foreclosure Defense rabbit hole, which has landed him on the ballot running for Charter Commissioner.  Jed intends to include provisions in the proposed county charter to restore and maintain the accuracy and integrity of our County's Property records, as well as keep Mendocino County homeowners in their homes.
